"Learning One Simple Technique of Meditation, Transcendental
Meditation"
While there are indeed hundreds of different methods of meditation, transcendental meditation is
one of the simplest techniques that will not require much time and effort.
The transcendental meditation (TM) technique was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India in
1957. He often emphasized that the ultimate goal of meditation is to enlighten the meditator, which is about
living life to its full potential, a state where life is free from suffering, where every thought and action
is spontaneously correct.
Transcendental meditation is simple to do, almost effortless and is suitable for anyone above
the age of 10. It is not about any religious beliefs, mind-control, a change in lifestyle nor any special
ability. Transcendental meditation takes you into a deep relaxation phase and rest when practiced for 15-20
minutes twice daily. It should be practiced once in the morning before breakfast, so that one can start the
day feeling alert and energized, and once in the evening before dinner, to relief accumulated stress from the
day and for a good night’s sleep.
Gary Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D. Neurologist at New York University Medical school explains that the “TM
technique generally allows the mind to settle down to experience a state of inner coherence and calm during
which time the left and right hemispheres, and the front and back of the brain, begin to work in harmony with
each other. This brain wave coherence has been correlated with improvements in memory, problem-solving and
decision-making abilities. This change in brain functioning also affects the rest of the physiology, reducing
high blood pressure, strengthening the heart, and overall improving health”.

Not only can one reap the benefits of meditation, transcendental meditation also helps one to relax and feel revitalized. Many people learn
transcendental meditation for several reasons:
• To help relief stress
• To have a clearer mind through relaxation
• To improve health and solve health problems
• For spiritual growth
The transcendental meditation technique is taught through a 7-step introduction course, by a
certified TM teacher. The initial 7-step learning process usually starts with an introductory and preparatory
lecture to introduce the mechanics of the TM technique. Following that, students will have a personal
interview and a one-on-one personal instruction program with the teacher. This is followed by several group
meetings to further understand and explore the technique of TM. Some courses also include an optional
follow-up of checking and knowledge to ensure maximum benefit.
Although the TM technique is highly systematized, it is a tailored program to suit each
individual. Everyone has a different pace of learning and different personal experience. As such, TM
technique cannot be learnt from a book or CD, because the teacher will provide instructions based on one’s
understanding of the previous instructions. It requires a one-to-one session.
During transcendental meditation, the mind settles inward beyond thought to experience pure
consciousness, also known as transcendental consciousness, while being fully awake. At the same time, the
body gains a unique yet profound state of restful alertness and relaxation as the brain functions with
significantly greater coherence.
While considering the different types of meditation, transcendental meditation is proven by
medical research as more effective than other meditation techniques.
